Dhaka: As Pakistan gears up to confront Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy 2025 on February 27, an off-field controversy has emerged. Mushtaq Ahmed, Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach and a former cricketer for Pakistan, has accused two iconic Pakistani players of harassment. He has publicly expressed his intention to initiate a defamation lawsuit amounting to 35 crores rupees against them and has suggested that his legal team will soon dispatch formal notices.
The two players embroiled in this controversy are Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, both of whom were once colleagues of Mushtaq Ahmed in the Pakistan national squad. Mushtaq made his allegations during an appearance on the YouTube channel ‘Sports Central,’ where he recorded a video message that openly reproached Akram and Younis. He underscored that, while he harbours no objections to their on-air analyses, he has serious concerns regarding their past conduct, which he claims adversely affected his confidence during their playing days.
Delving into the specifics of the lawsuit, Mushtaq Ahmed has revealed that he plans to file a defamation suit for 20 crores against Waqar Younis and a separate case for 15 crores rupees against Wasim Akram. The former cricketer asserted his readiness to pursue legal action over these past grievances.
In the aftermath of this public declaration, Waqar Younis was observed apologising to Mushtaq Ahmed live on air in a bid to alleviate the tension. In contrast, Wasim Akram maintained his stance, asserting that he would confront Mushtaq Ahmed in court.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, the exchanges between the former teammates have spurred speculation that the controversy may be more frivolous than it appears. During the same broadcast, Waqar Younis even mentioned that the dispute could ultimately enhance the program’s appeal, suggesting that the matter may reflect more playful banter than an authentic legal conflict.
