Patna: In a significant escalation ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, the Union Home Ministry has upgraded security for Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former minister Tej Pratap Yadav to the Y+ category, deploying Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel for round-the-clock protection.

The decision follows a detailed assessment by security agencies, which submitted a comprehensive report to the ministry highlighting potential threats. Tej Pratap, elder son of RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav and founder of Jan Shakti Janata Dal, had recently voiced apprehensions over his safety and formally urged the Centre for enhanced cover. Sources indicate this VIP protocol was invoked to mitigate risks during the heightened electoral atmosphere.

Under Y+ norms, 11 armed personnel — including commandos — will form a close perimeter, with five stationed at his residence. Coverage operates in three shifts, ensuring vigilant surveillance. This upgrade replaces prior arrangements, underscoring the government’s proactive stance on political figures’ vulnerabilities.

Tej Pratap remains a pivotal campaigner in the 2025 Bihar polls, fielding over 40 candidates for his party and contesting vigorously from the Mahua constituency. His whirlwind tours have amplified RJD’s outreach, blending fiery rhetoric with grassroots mobilisation. The move has sparked buzz in political corridors, with allies hailing it as a timely safeguard and opponents viewing it through an electoral lens.
