Central Portal To Monitor Movement Of Migrants, Help Contact Tracing

New Delhi: The Centre has launched an online portal to track the movement of migrant workers in the country during the lockdown.

Informing of the launch of National Migrant Information System (NMIS), the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Saturday said the portal will maintain a central repository of migrants travelling across states and also help in their contact tracing through their mobile numbers.

The ministry also asked all states and Union Territories to upload data of migrants such as name, age, mobile number, originating and destination districts and date of travel on the national dashboard for better coordination and movement monitoring, the Indian Express reported.

Based on the information, a unique ID will be generated for each migrant worker to be used for all transactions.

“This system will help in speedy communication between states without creating additional work at the level of the field officers. It has additional advantages like contact tracing which may be useful in overall COVID response,” Bhalla wrote to the chief secretaries and administrators of states.
