Bridge Collapses In Darbhanga, Breaks Into Three Parts

Patna: A busy bridge in Bihar’s Darbhanga district collapsed and broke into three parts on Monday.

The mishap took place at about 11am when an overloaded truck was crossing the Sahorbaghat bridge – which linked Satighat in Kusheshwar Astha with Rajghat in Hasanpur block of Samastipur district — over Kamla river around 11 am, informed local BDO Umesh Singh.

The truck hang perilously from the bridge, but the driver and cleaner had a miraculous escape.

A biker, who was crossing the bridge at that time, also fell from the bridge but escaped any major injury, the BDO said.

“A major accident was averted as a sand laden truck which was crossing over the bridge, stayed suspended in air from the broken bridge even as the driver and cleaner had a miraculous escape, the block development officer (BDO) of Kusheshwar Asthan Umesh Singh said.

The old screw pile bridge, which was repaired about 18-20 years ago, was a lifeline for around 2 lakh people belonging to several panchayats in Kusheshwarsthan block and.

The bridge was the only link to connect Hasanpur railway station with Kusheshwar Asthan block.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar had laid the foundation of reconstruction of the Satighat-Rajghat road two years ago. A new bridge was to be constructed at the spot, said an official.
