Kolkata: West Bengal Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose raised serious concerns about the law and order situation in the state. Addressing the recent incident of brutality against a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Governor remarked that this incident is merely the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to the broader issues plaguing West Bengal.
During the interview, Dr Bose stated, “The situation across West Bengal is alarming. The state has become a ‘soft’ target for criminal elements.” He further expressed his support for the victim’s family, asserting that authorities must instil confidence in the parents of the affected woman. The Governor also revealed that he has prepared a detailed report on policing and security in the state, which he plans to submit to the appropriate forum, though he refrained from divulging its contents publicly.
When asked about the possibility of President’s rule being imposed in the state, Dr Bose remained cautious, saying, “I cannot comment on the matter of President’s rule, but I will express my concerns at the right place. The ultimate solution lies in the Constitution, and I am currently evaluating the constitutional measures available. My report will be submitted soon.”
The Governor also highlighted the recurring violence he has observed during his tenure. “In the past 20 months, I have witnessed violence in more than 100 villages. The police appear to be acting under political pressure, deliberately allowing unrest to continue. The principle of ‘live and let live’ is absent in Bengal,” he said.
Dr CV Ananda Bose had spoken to other media outlets, raising issues regarding women’s safety. He expressed disappointment in the state government, stating, “West Bengal is not safe for women, and the administration has let them down.”
The Governor’s remarks have stirred further debate over the deteriorating security situation in the state, placing renewed focus on governance and law enforcement in West Bengal.
