Chandigarh: In a historic victory, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured an absolute majority in the Haryana Assembly, marking a significant political milestone. Devendra Attri, the BJP candidate, clinched the Uchana Kalan seat in a closely fought contest, defeating Congress candidate Brijendra Singh by just 32 votes. This narrow win not only secured BJP’s hold in the region but also underscored the waning influence of former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, whose party, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), has failed to win any seats in this election.
Dushyant Chautala, who was once a key player in the BJP government, faced a crushing defeat in his own constituency. Contesting from the same Uchana Kalan seat where he had previously held power, Chautala not only lost but also failed to save his deposit, garnering just 7,950 votes. Two independent candidates received more votes than him, marking a dramatic fall from his kingmaker status in the previous assembly elections, where his party had secured 10 seats.
In the last election, Chautala’s JJP formed an alliance with the BJP, securing the Deputy Chief Minister’s position. However, the alliance crumbled ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, forcing both parties to part ways. Despite this, the BJP managed to maintain power, relying on independent candidates to support its government.
The Congress, too, had high hopes for the Uchana Kalan seat, fielding Brijendra Singh, son of veteran politician Birender Singh, a five-time MLA from the constituency. Brijendra had left the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections and joined Congress, but his political switch failed to secure a win. Although Brijendra Singh put up a strong fight, securing thousands of votes, the presence of influential independent candidates, particularly Virendra Ghoghrian, split the vote. Ghoghrian, a former Congress member who had been expelled for alleged anti-party activities, posed a significant challenge, receiving more than 31,000 votes. Another independent, Vikas, also garnered over 13,000 votes, further diluting the Congress’s chances of victory.
Dushyant Chautala’s JJP has seen its fortunes dwindle since the breakup of the BJP alliance. Not only did Dushyant lose his seat, but his party’s influence across Haryana also took a hit, as it failed to win any constituencies. His loss in Uchana Kalan, once a stronghold, has become symbolic of the broader collapse of his party’s relevance in the state.
The BJP’s victory in Uchana Kalan, combined with its overall success in the state, has provided the party with a significant boost. This triumph not only marks a third consecutive term in power but also signals the BJP’s resilience in the face of electoral challenges. Meanwhile, the Congress and Dushyant Chautala’s JJP will need to regroup and reassess their strategies in the wake of this defeat.
As the BJP celebrates its victory, political observers note that the role of independent candidates has been pivotal in this election, particularly in regions like Uchana Kalan, where they have significantly altered the dynamics between the major parties.
