Jammu: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued two new lists of candidates for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The first list, containing the names of 15 candidates, shows no changes for the constituencies in the first phase. The second list includes a single candidate, Chaudhary Roshan Hussain Gujjar, who will contest from the Konkernag constituency.
This follows an earlier announcement on Monday when the BJP released a list of 44 candidates. However, that list was swiftly withdrawn, leading to internal dissent within the party. The original list detailed 15 candidates for the first phase, ten for the second, and 19 for the third. The withdrawal of this list sparked unrest among BJP leaders in Jammu, particularly those whose supporters were denied tickets.
Supporters of the excluded leaders flocked to the BJP office in Jammu, demanding reconsideration of the candidate selections. The situation became tense as party workers expressed their dissatisfaction with the ticket allocations.
BJP state president Ravinder Raina addressed the concerns of the party members, stating, “I respect all BJP workers who have gathered here. Every BJP worker is important to us. I will meet everyone and discuss their concerns with senior party leaders. If any worker is upset or has any issues, we will sit down and find a solution. I request everyone to express their views peacefully.”
Notably, the original list released on Monday morning did not include the names of former Deputy Chief Ministers Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta, both of whom were expected to receive tickets. Nirmal Singh, who won the Billawar assembly seat in 2014, and Kavinder Gupta are anticipated to be included in a subsequent list. Additionally, the absence of BJP state president Ravinder Raina’s name from the list raised further speculation.
