New Delhi: With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing resounding victories in the recent state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, the atmosphere is now charged for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Lobbying for party tickets has commenced in full swing, with numerous sitting MPs in Karnataka actively seeking tickets for themselves or their family members.
Among those seeking re-election are several long-serving BJP MPs, including P. C. Gaddigoudar from Bagalkot, G. M. Siddeshwara from Davangere, and Srinivas Prasad from Chamarajanagar. However, the party is also witnessing a wave of retirements, with notable figures such as D. V. Sadananda Gowda, V. Srinivas Prasad, and Shivakumar Udasi announcing their decision to step down from active politics.
Interestingly, many of the retiring MPs are advocating for the continuation of their political legacies through their family members. P. C. Gaddigoudar and G. M. Siddeshwara are reportedly lobbying hard to secure tickets for their sons, while Srinivas Prasad is seeking the ticket for his son-in-law, former Nanjangud BJP MLA B. Harshavardhan.
The BJP’s candidate selection process will also be influenced by its seat-sharing arrangements with its alliance partner, the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD) (S).
As the race for Lok Sabha tickets intensifies, the BJP faces the challenge of balancing the aspirations of its sitting MPs, the desire to bring in fresh faces, and the need to accommodate the interests of its alliance partner. The party’s decisions will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
