New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up for a massive nationwide membership drive starting 1 September 2024, aiming to enrol over 10 crore new members. The campaign will primarily focus on reinforcing the party’s grassroots reach ahead of upcoming elections. However, states like Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand will see the drive begin only after the assembly elections due to preparations currently underway.
In a recent meeting of BJP national office bearers, which included over 200 key figures like state presidents, organisation ministers, and in-charges, plans for the membership campaign and the party’s internal organisational elections were discussed. BJP General Secretary Vinod Tawde has been appointed as the national convenor for the membership drive, while Vice President Rekha Verma will serve as co-convenor.
The membership process has been made accessible through multiple channels, including a missed call service, QR codes, the NaMo App, and the BJP website. According to party spokesperson Sambit Patra, the BJP saw significant membership growth during previous drives, with 11 crore people joining under Amit Shah’s leadership in 2014-15, followed by another 7 crore in 2019, bringing the total to 18 crore members.
The current membership drive will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will run from 1 September to 25 September, followed by the second phase from 1 October to 15 October. After this, an active membership drive will be held from 16 October to 31 October, culminating in the preparation of a register of primary and active members between 1 November and 10 November.
The BJP has also assigned state-wise responsibilities to key leaders to oversee the drive. Vinod Tawde will manage Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, while Dushyant Gautam will handle West Bengal, Sikkim, Tripura, and Odisha. Rekha Verma has been tasked with overseeing Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Ladakh, and Chandigarh, among others.
The party has divided the responsibilities for its various fronts as well. Rituraj Sinha will oversee the Yuva Morcha, Rekha Verma will lead the Mahila Morcha, and Atul Garg will manage the Kisan Morcha. The BJP’s systematic approach reflects its intention to further expand its base across the country.
The membership drive’s delayed rollout in states with upcoming elections will allow the BJP to focus on critical electoral strategies before shifting its attention to expanding its membership base. With a structured and targeted approach, the party is poised to set new records in its ongoing efforts to increase engagement and reach every corner of the country.
