Patna: In a spine-chilling crime, an undertrial was shot dead by two assailants on the premises of Danapur court where he was being produced on Friday.
The constables accompanying the victim overpowered the assailants, who were taken into custody.
The 34-year-old Abhishek Kumar alias Chhote Sarkar, who was facing 15 cases, had been lodged in Patna’s Beur Jail for about a year in connection with a murder case. He was brought to Danapur civil court on Friday afternoon with two constables accompanying him, one of whom was armed.
“Just when Abhishek Kumar was taken for being produced before a court, an assailant started firing at him. But he was overpowered by the armed constable. But there was a second assailant, who was in the crowd and he started firing at Abhishek Kumar,” Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Rajiv Mishra said.

Chhote Sarkar, a resident of Bihta near Patna, was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.
He was an accused in eight murder, two extortion, three Arms Act and two miscellaneous cases.
According to the SSP, one of the assailants was also shot at and is under treatment at a hospital.
“Both assailants had come from Muzaffarpur. More information will emerge. It is too early to come to a conclusion about the motive. More persons could be involved in the case,” Mishra said.
SSP Mishra said court security needs to be discussed.
“It (security) is a matter of concern… In this case, two constables accompanying the accused acted swiftly and arrested both the assailants. But we need to discuss court security,” the SSP said.
