New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may be phasing out day-night Test matches in India, according to a recent statement by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. This move comes after a string of pink-ball Test matches that concluded within three days, failing to meet the traditional duration of a Test match.
“The BCCI is not keen on hosting pink-ball Tests anymore,” stated Shah. “Despite our efforts to promote them and make them popular, all the pink-ball Tests played in India so far have ended within two to three days. Fans are accustomed to watching Test matches for four to five days, and that’s what they enjoy.”
Shah further noted that no other country has hosted a pink-ball Test since India’s last such match against Australia. This reinforces BCCI’s apparent disinclination towards the format.
Team India has a successful history with the pink ball, winning three out of four matches played. Their most recent encounter, however, was against Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and concluded within three days, further solidifying the BCCI’s concerns.
The Indian women’s cricket team has even less experience with the format, having played only one pink-ball Test against Australia in 2021, which ended in a draw.
With the BCCI Secretary’s statement, the future of day-night Test matches in India appears uncertain. Fans may no longer see Team India showcasing their skills under the pink lights, as the board prioritises the traditional format that resonates with spectators.
As of now, Team India is touring South Africa for a two-match Test series, both of which will be played with the red ball, further solidifying BCCI’s current stance.
