New Delhi: Amid raucous protests by some Opposition parties, the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was passed in Lok Sabha on Monday.
The Bill seeks to link electoral rolls with the Aadhaar card to eliminate duplication.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Bill while Congress, DMK and TMC MPs stood in the Well of the House shouting slogans against the government, The Indian Express reported.
Rijiju said the legislation will end bogus voting in India and make the electoral process more credible.
Opposition parties were of the view that the Bill will infringe fundamental rights of citizens and violate Supreme Court judgment on Aadhaar. They demanded that the Bill be sent to a Standing Committee.
