Allahabad High Court Judge Seeks Euthanasia, CJI Seeks Report

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has sought a report from the Allahabad High Court administration on a petition filed by a woman judge in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district seeking euthanasia.

The woman judge, in her two-page letter, has sought permission to end her life following the alleged sexual harassment by a district judge during her posting in Barabanki.

The letter, which has gone viral on social media, expresses the woman judge’s distress and her desire to end her suffering.

In her letter, she writes, “I do not want to live anymore. For the last one and a half years, I have been like a living corpse. I don’t have a purpose in life. Please allow me to end my life in a dignified manner.”

The CJI has directed the Secretary-General of the Supreme Court to seek a status report from the Allahabad High Court administration on the investigation into the woman judge’s complaint.

The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed a petition filed by the woman judge seeking directions to the Allahabad High Court to expedite the proceedings before the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) looked into her complaint.

The bench, comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Sandeep Mehta, observed that the matter was sub-judice before the ICC and a resolution had been passed, subject to the approval of the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
