Lucknow: Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has received significant relief from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, which has granted him bail in a 23-year-old case. This case, stemming from a protest held in 2001, had earlier resulted in a sentence of three months’ imprisonment issued by an MP/MLA court.
The High Court’s decision to grant bail to Sanjay Singh is being viewed as a major reprieve for the AAP leader, who has been embroiled in legal battles recently. Expressing his gratitude following the ruling, Singh remarked, “Truth has prevailed with the decision of the Honorable High Court.”
The case dates back to 19 June 2001, when Sanjay Singh, along with several others, staged a sit-in protest in Sultanpur, raising concerns over water and electricity shortages. The protest, which saw the participation of former corporators Kamal Srivastava, Santosh, Vijay Kumar, and Subhash Chaudhary, led to a police case being filed at Kotwali Nagar police station. Subsequently, Sanjay Singh was sentenced to three months in prison. A non-bailable warrant and a notice to surrender were also issued against him following the sentencing.
The Allahabad High Court’s decision comes as a continuation of legal relief for Sanjay Singh, who recently also received a favourable ruling from the Supreme Court in connection with a separate liquor scam case.
This latest decision by the High Court is seen as a significant development in the ongoing legal challenges faced by the AAP leader, providing a much-needed respite in a long-standing legal battle.
