Following this decision, Akash was noticeably absent from the party’s recent national executive meeting in Lucknow.
Stepping into the spotlight in his absence was his younger brother, Ishaan Anand, who made a striking first appearance on the party’s official main stage. Adorned with the traditional blue BSP scarf, Ishaan was seated prominently alongside Mayawati and his father, Anand Kumar. The visual immediately sparked intense political speculation about whether a new heir is being groomed for the party’s future.
The dramatic reshuffle adds another chapter to Akash Anand’s turbulent political journey. In December 2023, Mayawati appointed him as the BSP National Coordinator and officially declared him her political successor. A law graduate from Westminster University in London, Ishaan has previously been spotted at organisational events and his aunt’s birthday celebrations. Still, his presence on the dais of the national executive meeting is being viewed by political analysts as a definitive statement. According to party insiders, Mayawati is contemplating handing over the reins of the party’s youth wing to Ishaan, which would mark his formal and structural entry into active politics.
Although Mayawati has previously reiterated that she will not officially name a successor during her lifetime, every visual and strategic move in BSP politics carries heavy symbolism. With the crucial 2027 state elections on the horizon, the party is actively trying to consolidate its traditional Dalit vote bank while appealing to younger demographics.
