Did you know that you can be 80 and still be naughty? A report in Times of India threw light on Dr Narayana Reddy’s study titled ‘Sexual Behaviour In The Ageing Population’. Here are its top findings:
- Men and women between 50 and 59 have sex 10 times a month.
- 71 per cent men and 48 per cent women said they were turned on by explicit sexual material.
- 22.65% husbands and 24.06% wives said they had initiated sex.
- Erectile dysfunction (29.47 per cent), associated illness (16.63 per cent), lack of privacy (12.59 per cent) were the top reasons for reduced coital frequency in men.
- For women, the reasons were sexual problems of partner (23.52 per cent), associated illness (18.89 per cent) and lack of partner (18.18 per cent).
- Nearly 30 per cent men and 17 per cent women admitted to having extra marital sex.
- 90.6 per cent men said they masturbated after marriage.
- 21.9 per cent men and 24.42 per cent women undress totally for sex.
- Nearly 50 per cent men and women preferred man on top position.
- More than 60 per cent men and women said they had sex only in the night.
- 41.99 per cent men and 44.74 per cent women spent more than 5-10 minutes on foreplay.
Dr Reddy explained that there is a prevalent notion in the Indian society that “once you cross 50, you become asexual” and older “parents usually don’t sleep in the same room”. He also said that grandparents are usually roped in for baby sitting. Children should understand that their parents are not asexual, he added.
Sexual problems can be addressed medically or through counselling techniques wherever applicable, he said.
