Kolkata: A fresh FIR has been lodged against Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, adding another legal flashpoint to West Bengal’s already charged political atmosphere. The complaint was filed at Bhawanipore police station by a resident named Arnab Kanti Das, who accused Banerjee of making provocative remarks and misusing his political position.

According to the the report, the complainant alleged that Banerjee’s remarks could disturb communal harmony and spread hatred through social media. Das has also reportedly submitted a copy of the statement which, according to him, forms the basis of the complaint. The allegation remains subject to police investigation and legal scrutiny.

The complaint refers to a May 2 post from Banerjee’s X handle, in which he had criticised what he called the “Bangla Birodhi Gujarati gang” and challenged his political opponents over the Diamond Harbour model. The complainant has claimed that such language was inflammatory and unacceptable from a senior public representative.

This is not the first FIR against Banerjee in recent weeks. Earlier, an FIR was registered at Bidhannagar North Cyber Crime Police Station over allegedly inflammatory remarks made during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign. That complaint was filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar and was linked to remarks concerning post poll violence, the counting process and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The earlier case had drawn strong political reactions. While police began examining whether the comments could affect public order and communal harmony, TMC MP Saugata Roy dismissed the allegations as political vendetta and said he did not find the remarks offensive.

The latest FIR also comes a day after a separate complaint was filed against TMC chief Mamata Banerjee at Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station over alleged remarks related to religious sentiments. That complaint was filed by advocate Rinki Singh Chatterjee.

With multiple complaints now surrounding senior TMC leaders, the political temperature in Bengal is likely to rise further. For the ruling establishment in the state and its opponents, the issue is no longer limited to individual statements. It has become part of a larger post election battle over political language, public order and legal accountability.
