Srinagar: Following the announcement of election dates in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah has called upon leaders of the INDIA alliance to actively connect with the electorate. He emphasised that the alliance must approach the upcoming elections in these states with utmost seriousness.
Abdullah expressed concerns regarding the BJP’s strategy in Jammu, where he claimed the party instilled fear among Hindus, suggesting that a return to power for the NC-Congress coalition would lead to a resurgence of terrorism. He critiqued the Congress for failing to dispel this fear among the public, which he believes hindered their performance in Jammu.
On the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, Abdullah expressed regret over the situation and underscored the importance of maintaining friendly relations. He raised questions regarding the source of information that led Canada to take a firm stance against India, suggesting it may have originated from American intelligence.
Abdullah accused the US intelligence agencies of providing Canada with evidence implicating India’s RAW agency in the killing of Nijjar. He stressed that while he is uncertain how the Indian government will respond, it is crucial to uphold the principles of friendship between nations.
In a related political development, Umar Abdullah, the NC’s Vice President, is set to take the oath of office as Chief Minister for the second time on 16 October, following the abrogation of Article 370 and the transition of Jammu and Kashmir to Union Territory status. The NC secured victory in 42 seats, with support from six Congress members and five independent legislators, bringing their total to 55. Sources indicate that Umar Abdullah may resign from his Budgam seat after the swearing-in ceremony.
