New Delhi: In a significant development for Indian sports, veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. The premier pacer, widely celebrated for his flawless seam presentation and reverse swing, took to Instagram on Friday night to share an emotional video and a heartfelt Hindi note, drawing the curtains on a glorious red-ball career.
Bidding farewell to the longest and most demanding format of the game, Shami reflected on his incredible decade-long journey, stating that while he is leaving the traditional white flannels behind, the cherished memories will stay with him for a lifetime. “When I wore India’s Test jersey for the first time, I had only one dream — to do something for my country,” Shami wrote. “Since then, every wicket, every struggle, every injury, and every comeback has taught me something.”
The speedster expressed his profound emotional connection to red-ball cricket in his social media address. “Test cricket has not just been a format for me; it has been a deeply special part of my life. Today, with a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories, I am announcing my retirement from Test cricket,” the emotional post read.
Shami made his spectacular Test debut against the West Indies at the iconic Eden Gardens in November 2013, where he immediately made his mark by claiming a memorable nine-wicket haul. Over the ensuing years, he evolved into one of the most reliable and lethal wicket-takers for the Indian national team, playing a crucial role in historic overseas victories across Australia, England, and South Africa. His final appearance for India in the whites came against Australia during the World Test Championship final at The Oval in June 2023.
In his farewell message, the prolific bowler expressed deep gratitude to the people who stood by him throughout his professional highs and personal lows. “A heartfelt thank you to every teammate, coach, family member, and the millions of Indians who supported me on this journey, and who kept their faith in me through both good times and bad,” he added.
Shami also extended his sincere appreciation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for backing his talent and giving him opportunities to flourish on the international stage. Concluding his poignant announcement, the legendary pacer wrote, “Even though my final Test ball has been bowled on the field, the pride of playing for India will always remain alive in my heart. Thank you, Test cricket.”
