New Delhi: In a fascinating crossover between the worlds of entertainment and sports, Pune-based Parashar Joshi has transitioned from the glittering stage of ‘Indian Idol’ to the cricket pitch as a professional umpire. Now, his unique journey has hit a major milestone, as he is set to officiate in Australia’s prestigious domestic tournaments under a special exchange programme between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia (CA).
The new umpiring exchange initiative, launched during the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, aims to provide valuable international exposure to domestic umpires. Under this reciprocal arrangement, Australian umpire Ben Treloar is currently standing in two Ranji Trophy matches in India, while the BCCI has selected the experienced Joshi to travel down under.
Before making his mark in the cricketing arena, Joshi harboured a deep passion for music. After facing rejections in auditions for three consecutive years, his persistence finally paid off when he reached the piano round of ‘Indian Idol Season 4’ in 2008. Although his musical journey on the reality show ended there, his longstanding connection with sports paved the way for an entirely new career path.
A former club-level cricketer, Joshi decided to master the laws of the game and pursue professional umpiring. His rise through the ranks was swift. The BCCI officially inducted him into its umpire panel in 2015, and he has since built a robust professional resume. According to official cricket records, Joshi has officiated in 19 first-class matches across the Ranji and Duleep Trophies, 32 List-A games including the Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophies, and 40 domestic T20 matches. His extensive experience also includes officiating stints in the high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
“Cricket and music are two fields where millions of youngsters try their luck, but only a few manage to carve out a distinct identity,” noted a sports analyst familiar with Joshi’s career trajectory.
During his upcoming Australian tour, Joshi will handle a rigorous and high-stakes schedule. He is slated to officiate the four-day Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and Tasmania in Brisbane from November 11 to 14. Following this, he will stand in Australia’s domestic One-Day Cup clash at the same venue on November 16. His tour will conclude with another marquee Sheffield Shield fixture between New South Wales and Queensland at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from November 22 to 25.
Joshi’s remarkable transition from reality television to international umpiring exchanges serves as a rare and inspiring example of pursuing dual passions with unwavering dedication.
