Bengaluru: Following the conclusion of the thrilling five-match T20I series between India and the West Indies, which ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw due to a washout in the final game in Bengaluru, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer was honoured with a special dressing room award. Recognising his exceptional all-round performance throughout the series, Iyer was awarded the ‘Impact Player of the Series’ medal.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video of the presentation on its social media platforms. The video was captioned, “Rain, runs, and some dressing room BTS. Summing up the series decider, ft. the Impact Player of the Series medal presentation.” In the heartwarming clip, India’s training assistant, Nuwan Seneviratne, presented the medal to the captain amidst cheers and applause from teammates and support staff.
Iyer enjoyed a highly productive series with the bat, establishing himself as a key contributor. He finished as the third-highest run-scorer in the series, amassing 181 runs across five innings. His batting was marked by aggressive intent, boasting a stellar average of 45.25 and a blistering strike rate of 205.68. A major highlight of his campaign was a phenomenal maiden T20I century in the series opener in Lucknow. With that knock, he became only the seventh Indian men’s cricketer to score centuries in all three international formats.
Beyond his batting exploits, Iyer was commended for his sharp captaincy and agile fielding during high-pressure situations against a formidable West Indies lineup.
The closely fought series saw India claiming victories in the first and third matches, while the West Indies bounced back strongly to win the second and fourth games. With the final T20I abandoned due to rain, the two teams shared the trophy. Interestingly, while Iyer took home the dressing room medal, West Indies captain Shai Hope was named the official Player of the Series for his incredible tally of 261 runs, which included two centuries.
The Indian team will now travel to New Zealand for another five-match T20I series. The upcoming tour will commence with back-to-back games at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22 and 24, where Iyer will look to secure his first overseas T20I series win as captain.
