New Delhi: Providing major relief to employers across the country, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has officially extended the deadline for filing Provident Fund (PF) returns for the month of September 2026. Companies and institutions now have until October 31, 2026, to file their returns, an extension from the previous deadline of October 15.
Under the stringent regulations set by the EPFO, employers are mandatorily required to submit details related to their employees’ salaries and PF contributions every month. This is done through an Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR). The simultaneous deposit of the corresponding PF contribution is also mandatory within this timeframe.
The extension to October 31 grants employers much-needed additional time to accurately prepare their returns, cross-check payroll data, and rectify any discrepancies related to employee contributions. According to officials, the extra time will be particularly helpful in accommodating recent adjustments in PF rules. These recent regulatory shifts often require companies to make necessary modifications to their internal payroll systems and employee records, meaning wage calculations, employee eligibility, and PF contribution details must be thoroughly updated.
Filing an accurate ECR is critical as it contains vital information regarding an employee’s salary and their social security contributions. This encompasses details for the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), and the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).
Experts urge companies to ensure that all salary and contribution details are recorded flawlessly. Entering incorrect information can lead to severe administrative complications and disrupt an employee’s PF records in the long run. Employers are therefore advised to thoroughly verify all details before the final submission.
Simultaneously, financial advisors recommend that employees actively monitor their salary slips and PF accounts. If a PF deduction is reflecting on a pay slip, employees should proactively check their EPFO portal to confirm that the exact amount has been successfully credited to their account.
Overall, the deadline extension gives employers adequate breathing room to complete the filing and deposition processes by October 31, ensuring that the PF records of millions of employees remain organized and accurate.
