Mumbai: In what could be one of the most significant leadership shake-ups ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to return as the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI). According to various media reports, the franchise’s top management is seriously considering handing the leadership reins back to their most successful skipper in a bid to restore the team’s past glory.

The anticipated decision comes after a tumultuous period for the five-time champions under the captaincy of all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Ahead of the 2024 season, the Mumbai-based franchise made a highly debated move by trading Pandya from Gujarat Titans and instantly appointing him as the captain, replacing Rohit. The transition, however, did not yield the desired results and drew significant ire from the fanbase.

Under Pandya’s leadership, the Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the points table in 2024. While they managed a brief resurgence to reach the playoffs in 2025, the team’s overall performance plummeted again in 2026, prompting the management to rethink their core strategy. Reports suggest that the franchise wants to bring back the stability, fighting spirit, and dressing room harmony that were the hallmarks of the ‘Hitman’ era. Rohit has previously led MI to five IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020).

If Rohit does reclaim the captaincy, it raises major questions about Hardik Pandya’s future with the team. Speculation is rife that the all-rounder could be traded to another franchise, with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) emerging as potential frontrunners.

Furthermore, reports indicate that the Mumbai Indians are also focusing on long-term succession planning. With Rohit nearing 40, the franchise is reportedly eyeing a mega trade to bring in explosive young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal from the Rajasthan Royals. Securing Jaiswal would not only provide MI with a formidable opening partner for Rohit but also establish a future cornerstone for the team once the veteran eventually decides to step away from the league.

While there has been no official confirmation from the Mumbai Indians management or the players involved, the potential return of Rohit Sharma to the helm has already generated immense excitement across the cricketing community.
