Nagoya: Scripting a golden chapter in Indian sporting history, the Indian women’s hockey team defeated defending champions China 1-0 to clinch the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya. This historic victory ended a 44-year-long wait for the elusive gold and also secured a direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The match-winning moment arrived early in the first quarter when star forward Lalremsiami struck a spectacular goal. In the 10th minute of the game, following a well-calculated pass from her teammate Sakshi, Lalremsiami swiftly changed direction and unleashed a sensational tomahawk shot. The strike was so fierce and precise that the Chinese goalkeeper, despite a desperate dive, was left helpless as the ball found the corner of the net. This solitary goal gave India an unassailable lead, which a rock-solid Indian defence successfully maintained until the final whistle.

For the Indian women’s hockey team, this triumph heals decades of heartbreak. The last time the team stood at the top of the podium at the Asian Games was during the 1982 edition held in New Delhi. Over the last four decades, the team had come agonisingly close but faltered at the final hurdle, settling for silver medals against South Korea in 1998 and Japan in 2018.

The significance of this monumental victory extends beyond the Asian continent. According to the tournament’s regulations, the gold medal-winning team secures an automatic berth for the upcoming Olympic Games, officially booking India’s ticket to Los Angeles in 2028.

Congratulatory messages poured in from across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the achievement on social media, stating, “A very special moment for Indian hockey! The people of India are thrilled by the success of the women’s hockey team, who have brought home the gold medal at the Asian Games after more than four decades. This is the result of brilliant skills and teamwork.”

To further celebrate the success, Hockey India announced a cash prize of ₹11 lakh for each player and ₹5.5 lakh for every support staff member. In an official statement, the sporting body called the reward “an honour for the hard work, dedication, and continuous efforts that took the Women in Blue to the top in Asia.”
