Mumbai: Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is being hailed as a hero worldwide after he bravely thwarted an alleged attempt by his Omani co-pilot to crash a flydubai aircraft carrying approximately 180 Israeli passengers.
The terrifying mid-air incident unfolded on Wednesday aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to various witness reports and officials, a violent altercation broke out in the cockpit when the co-pilot attempted to take control of the Boeing 737 and intentionally crash it. During the ensuing physical struggle, Captain Machchhar was repeatedly stabbed and left drenched in blood.
Flight-tracking data revealed that the aircraft experienced a rapid and terrifying descent, plunging over 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. Despite being severely injured, the Indian captain fought back and managed to alert the cabin crew and passengers, who quickly intervened to help subdue the co-pilot and secure the cockpit. The aircraft subsequently transmitted emergency distress signals, including a specific transponder code indicating unlawful interference. This prompted a hijack scare, leading Israel to scramble its fighter jets. Fortunately, the flight was safely diverted and made an emergency landing at Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement praising the swift actions of those who intervened. “I salute these heroes who showed exceptional resourcefulness and courage. They saved many lives and prevented a major disaster,” Netanyahu said, as reported by global news agencies.
All passengers and crew members aboard the aircraft were reported safe following the emergency landing. According to official sources, Captain Machchhar, who hails from Mumbai, underwent surgery in Saudi Arabia and is currently in a stable condition.
The seasoned aviator brings a wealth of experience to the cockpit. His professional profile indicates he has clocked over 9,750 flying hours, with 13 years of commercial flying experience on Boeing 737 aircraft. Machchhar joined the Emirati airline flydubai as a Direct Entry Captain in June 2022. Prior to this international stint, he served for 11 years with the Indian carrier SpiceJet, where he worked as a senior commander and Line Training Captain.
While authorities are currently investigating the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the co-pilot’s shocking actions, the global aviation community continues to applaud Captain Machchhar for his incredible bravery and presence of mind in the face of imminent danger.
