The President’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, citing “false and biased” reporting, has been openly contradicted by the First Lady’s office.
President Trump had previously revoked the press credentials of journalists from these three prominent national news outlets, effectively banning them from covering White House events. The unprecedented move has sparked widespread criticism and a legal battle, with the affected media organisations filing a lawsuit under the First Amendment, challenging the ban. The court is scheduled to hear the case on Wednesday.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Melania Trump’s office approved press credentials for CNN and Politico for an event held during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 2026) on Tuesday. The event focused on her “Fostering the Future Together” coalition, an initiative aimed at promoting the well-being of children through education and technology.
According to a report by CNN, their credentials for the Tuesday event were approved on Sunday evening, just one day after the President’s ban was implemented. This move by the First Lady is being seen as a direct contradiction to her husband’s stance on the media.
The tension over media access was further highlighted when President Trump arrived at the UN on Tuesday before his General Assembly address. Upon spotting CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins, the President expressed his displeasure. “I am surprised CNN is covering me here,” he reportedly told Collins. “You shouldn’t be here to cover me.
