Chennai: In a major development ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach. The 47-year-old cricketing stalwart steps into the shoes of Stephen Fleming, who stepped down from the position in July to take over as the head coach of the England men’s Test team.
The high-profile appointment marks the beginning of a new era for the five-time IPL champions, ending Fleming’s historic, long-standing association with the Chennai-based franchise. Zaheer, who previously served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2024 and held coaching roles with the Mumbai Indians, brings a wealth of tactical expertise and invaluable experience to the yellow camp.
Expressing his excitement about his new role, Zaheer Khan said, “It is an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk makes it even more special. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India’s success in the 2000s. He is one of the finest cricketing brains, and we look forward to having him in our family,” Viswanathan remarked.
As a player, Zaheer Khan enjoyed a highly successful IPL career, featuring in 100 matches and claiming 102 wickets at an average of 27.27 before retiring in 2017. Known for his sharp tactical acumen and his instrumental role in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, his transition to the helm of CSK is expected to breathe fresh strategic vigour into the acclaimed franchise as they rebuild for the upcoming seasons.
