MUMBAI: The highly anticipated release of Salman Khan’s upcoming war drama, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest In Peace, has hit a major roadblock. Previously expected to hit theatres this year, the film is currently stranded at the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Its clearance has been delayed primarily due to the sensitive nature of its storyline, which revolves around India-China geopolitical tensions.
Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the ambitious project was initially announced under the title Battle of Galwan before being rechristened earlier this year. The narrative draws deep inspiration from the tragic 2020 India-China military clashes in the Galwan Valley. Alongside Salman Khan, who headlines the project, the movie features prominent actors Chitrangda Singh and Ankur Bhatia in pivotal roles.
While recent industry chatter suggested that the censor board would screen the film next week to push the certification process forward, fresh reports indicate that the project remains firmly stalled. Quoting an industry insider, a report by Bollywood Hungama noted that no official CBFC screening has been scheduled as of now.
“I wish these reports were true, but with a heavy heart, I must inform you that sadly, there is no update on its CBFC screening. The film is still stuck due to its China connection,” the source revealed.
To break the administrative deadlock, the producers are reportedly engaged in active discussions with relevant government officials. The production team hopes that once the bureaucratic hurdles are cleared and the sensitive geopolitical themes are addressed, they can promptly secure the censor certificate. Only then can the team begin mapping out a concrete theatrical release strategy. However, the exact timeline remains murky; industry trackers suggest the delay could span a few weeks or stretch into an indefinite hold.
Addressing the possibility of the film arriving in cinemas in 2026, the insider added, “Everything depends on when the issues are resolved. If it happens quickly, the makers will undoubtedly try to bring the film to theatres in 2026, although there are not many free slots available.”
For now, fans eagerly awaiting Khan’s return to the action-drama genre will have to hold out for an official breakthrough as the filmmakers navigate the complexities surrounding this high-stakes cinematic venture.
