Mumbai: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made a major declaration regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), setting a concrete target to implement the legal framework across all 21 states governed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before the year 2029.
Speaking at a public event in Mumbai, Shah outlined the government’s ongoing commitment to standardising civil laws across the nation. “We introduced the Uniform Civil Code in several states. I am confident that we will implement the UCC in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA before 2029,” the Home Minister stated.
The UCC aims to replace existing religion-specific personal laws with a common, unified set of rules that will govern critical civil matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all citizens. While the core objective remains uniform, Shah indicated that the specific provisions and the legal processes might vary slightly at the state level.
Beyond domestic civil reforms, the Home Minister prominently highlighted the aggressive shift in India’s national security and defence strategy under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shah asserted that India no longer limits its retaliation to terrorist attacks within its own borders.
Citing decisive military actions like the surgical strikes, air strikes, and ‘Operation Sindoor’, he noted that these operations sent an unequivocal message to the global community. He emphasised that India will not hesitate to take a stringent stance against terrorism, even if it requires crossing borders to destroy enemy bases. “The country has developed a security and defence policy that has instilled fear in those who try to attack India,” Shah added, stating that the nation’s anti-terror approach is now clearer and stricter than ever before.
Shah made these remarks while addressing the 52nd India Gems and Jewellery Awards. During the ceremony, he lauded the sector for its immense contribution to India’s economic prosperity, global recognition, and massive employment generation. Addressing the gathering of exporters, manufacturers, and professionals, he urged the industry to maintain high-quality standards to drive further economic progress.
Additionally, the Home Minister used the platform to announce the launch of a month-long ‘Seva Sankalp’ campaign, which is scheduled to run nationwide from September 17 to October 17.
