New Delhi: The controversy surrounding the recent CJP protests at Jantar Mantar has escalated further, with protester Nishu Azad approaching the Delhi Police to seek urgent security. Azad has alleged that she is receiving persistent death and rape threats, expressing grave concerns for the safety and well-being of her entire family.
Taking swift cognizance of her complaint, the authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) at the Parliament Street police station. The case has been filed under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act, alongside other applicable legal provisions.
Speaking to the media, Azad revealed that the threats began pouring in shortly after her active participation in the recent protests. She highlighted that the situation deteriorated significantly on Thursday when the National President of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Vinod Jakhar, visited her residence to extend his support.
“After the NSUI president came to meet me, some people living in my neighbourhood started making highly objectionable and abusive remarks. They openly claimed to be BJP supporters and stated that they stand in solidarity with Swatantra Bhardwaj,” Azad stated, detailing the intimidation she faced locally.
She further claimed that the harassment extends far beyond her physical surroundings. According to her complaint, her social media accounts on platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) have been flooded with derogatory and obscene comments. Additionally, she has been receiving threatening phone calls and messages from multiple unidentified mobile numbers, which ultimately prompted her to formally demand police protection.
The escalating threats come against the backdrop of recent police action regarding a controversial viral podcast. Acting on the issue, law enforcement agencies arrested Swatantra Bhardwaj on Friday. He was subsequently produced in court on Saturday and remanded to one-day police custody. During the hearing, the legal counsel representing Sanjay Azad raised strong objections in court regarding the brief duration of the police remand, demanding a more thorough interrogation.
Meanwhile, Nishu Azad has vehemently appealed to the authorities to initiate strict legal action against the individuals issuing the threats. The police have assured a comprehensive investigation into the origin of the threatening calls and social media accounts, to trace and apprehend the culprits.
