Amstelveen: In a crucial encounter at the 2026 Hockey World Cup, the Indian men’s hockey team went down 1-3 to hosts Netherlands at the Wagener Stadium on Saturday, after a momentary defensive lapse in the third quarter tilted the momentum decisively in favour of the Dutch side.

Following two closely fought, goalless opening quarters where India maintained disciplined structural control, the deadlock was broken in the 41st minute. The Netherlands launched a swift raid from the right flank, culminating in Duco Telgenkamp deflecting the ball past Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera just before it could be cleared.

The Dutch side capitalised on their momentum in the fourth quarter with sharp counter-attacking transitions from deep defence. In the 52nd minute, another incisive build-up from the right flank saw Tjep Hoedemakers apply a clean finish to establish an unassailable 3-1 advantage.

India responded with aggressive intent down the final stretch. Midfielder Rajinder worked his way inside the Dutch circle with exceptional stickwork to earn a crucial penalty corner. Indian skipper Harmanpreet Singh stepped up to execute the drag-flick; after his initial attempt deflected off a Dutch defender’s foot to force a retake, he fired a low, precision strike past the goalkeeper’s right to put India on the scoreboard. However, the late surge was not enough to overhaul the Dutch lead.

Earlier in the match, India squandered key opportunities to take the lead. In the 24th minute, Dilpreet Singh received a pinpoint pass from Manpreet Singh in front of the goal, only to be denied by a sharp reflex save from the Dutch goalkeeper. Subsequent penalty corner routines were repeatedly thwarted by the Dutch defensive rushers, including a variation attempt between Sanjay and Shilanand Lakra in the 43rd minute.

Despite the setback, former captain Manpreet Singh delivered an outstanding performance, charging down three consecutive Dutch penalty corners to keep India in contention. Goalkeepers Mohith and Karkera also registered vital saves during high-pressure phases. The high-octane contest was witnessed from the stands by sporting luminaries, including former Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid and Australian cricket great Steve Waugh.
