Jaipur: State budget documents have brought Rajasthan’s worsening government school infrastructure into sharp focus, revealing that more than 2,500 state-run schools are operating in dilapidated structures, while 611 institutions—including Anganwadis—lack their own buildings. The findings coincide with intense political friction following a violent clash in Jaipur district, where an inspection team from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) was reportedly attacked.
To counter the deficit, the state government has outlined an extensive development outlay in the upcoming budget. Officials attributed the deterioration to neglect under the previous administration, noting that systemic oversights had led to several safety incidents.
Under the new plan, the government has earmarked ₹550 crore for the renovation and repair of over 2,500 damaged schools. An additional ₹450 crore has been allocated to construct premises for 300 schools currently functioning without buildings or within condemned properties. A separate ₹200 crore will fund more than 1,500 new classrooms, science laboratories, and computer labs, alongside upgraded sanitation facilities and facial-recognition attendance systems.
Political tensions escalated on Friday when a CJP delegation visited a government school in Rampura Kanwarpura village, Jaipur district. The school had reportedly been operating out of a cattle shed after its original building was declared unsafe and sealed. The party alleged that local residents and BJP workers pelted stones at the delegation, vandalized their vehicles, and mistreated female party workers while police remained inactive.
The CJP has issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the arrest of the perpetrators. In response, State Education Minister Madan Dilawar accused the CJP of attempting to create unrest in Rajasthan. Conversely, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee President Govind Singh Dotasra identified the attackers as BJP cadres. The controversy follows a recent school tragedy in Jhalawar, after which the state government tabled an audit report in the Assembly holding the previous Ashok Gehlot-led government accountable for structural lapses.
