Srinagar: United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday for a two-day visit, his first trip to the region since the abrogation of Article 370, in a move being seen as a significant diplomatic signal amid heightened tensions along India’s borders with Pakistan and China.

Gor met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in Srinagar, holding discussions on deepening cooperation between the Union Territory and the United States in areas such as tourism, horticulture and the new economy. He is scheduled to travel to Ladakh on Thursday, marking the first such visit by a top American diplomat to the region since the 2020 Galwan clash between Indian and Chinese troops.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important” part of India and expressed enthusiasm about the region’s natural beauty, later taking a shikara ride on Dal Lake. He also indicated that Washington could review and potentially ease its existing travel advisories for the region to encourage greater American tourist footfall.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the talks as cordial, saying the conversation focused primarily on what the United States could contribute to Jammu and Kashmir going forward. “We had an opportunity to discuss the relations between our two countries but with specific focus on what the US can do with Jammu and Kashmir. There are obviously certain legacy issues that over time we will be working to resolve, but we look forward to taking this conversation further,” Abdullah said, adding that he remained “hopeful and optimistic” that engagement between the United States and Jammu and Kashmir would “widen and deepen in the years ahead.”

Foreign policy observers said the visit carries weight beyond routine diplomacy, coming at a time when Washington has been simultaneously strengthening ties with Islamabad. Gor’s remarks affirming India’s position on Kashmir are being viewed as a message to Pakistan, which continues to dispute India’s sovereignty over the region, while his planned onward visit to Ladakh is being read as a signal to China amid continuing friction along the Line of Actual Control, including reported incremental activity by Chinese forces in Arunachal Pradesh’s Taksing sector.

Analysts note that Gor’s itinerary touches three sensitive fronts simultaneously: post-Article 370 engagement in Kashmir, the broader US-India strategic and economic partnership, and the still-tense LAC dispute with China, making the visit closely watched in both Islamabad and Beijing.
