New Jersey: In a stunning upset at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Ecuador booked their place in the Round of 32 knockout stage after registering a dramatic 2-1 victory over four-time champions Germany at the MetLife Stadium.

The high-voltage Group E encounter saw the South American side bounce back from a goal down to secure their qualification. With this win, Ecuador advanced to the knockout stage as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the tournament, marking only the second time in their footballing history that they have progressed past the group stage.

The match commenced with high drama as Germany took the lead within the opening two minutes. Winger Leroy Sané found the back of the net to give the European heavyweights a 1-1 advantage. However, the goal was shrouded in controversy, drawing sharp protests from the Ecuadorian players who claimed the referee had overlooked a foul leading up to the strike.

Undeterred by the early setback, Ecuador, who had failed to score a single goal in their opening two tournament fixtures, initiated a spirited counter-attack. The equalizer arrived courtesy of winger Nilson Angulo, who unleashed a brilliant 20-yard strike that beat veteran German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, bringing the scoreline to 1-1.

The second half turned into a tactical battle of attrition, with German coach Julian Nagelsmann introducing several strategic substitutions to break the deadlock. However, Ecuador’s defensive discipline held firm against the pressure.

The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute from a set-piece. Following a well-directed header by Kevin Rodríguez from a corner kick, Gonzalo Plata capitalized on the opportunity to score from close range, securing the winning 2-1 margin for Ecuador.

Despite the unexpected defeat, Germany managed to retain the top spot in Group E based on earlier results. The upcoming round will mark Germany’s first knockout appearance at a World Cup since their championship-winning campaign in 2014, having suffered humiliating group-stage exits in the previous two editions of the tournament.

According to tournament organizers, Germany will now face one of the qualified third-placed teams in the Round of 32, while a rejuvenated Ecuador awaits their next opponent in the knockout brackets.
