New Delhi: Powerful seismic tremors jolted parts of China and Japan on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction in the northwestern Chinese region while disrupting essential transport services in eastern Japan. The dual earthquakes have triggered immediate emergency responses across both Asian nations as authorities actively assess the widespread impact on public safety and infrastructure.
A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the Haixi area in the Qinghai province of China. According to data released by the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicentre of the massive quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. The natural disaster claimed the life of at least one individual, while four others sustained severe injuries. The initial tremor was quickly followed by multiple aftershocks, with one registering a significant 4.9 magnitude on the scale.
Acting swiftly on the crisis, the China Earthquake Administration initiated a high level emergency response protocol. Rescue and relief teams have been deployed extensively to search for individuals who might be trapped under the debris. Furthermore, all operational workers stationed at coal mines near the epicentre were safely evacuated to prevent any secondary disasters in the highly vulnerable zones.
Hours later, a preliminary 5.5 magnitude earthquake rattled the eastern territories of Japan, bringing significant tremors to the capital city of Tokyo. The Japanese Meteorological Agency confirmed that the quake struck at 7:46 PM local time, with its epicentre situated approximately 50 kilometres below the surface in the southern part of the Ibaraki prefecture. Authorities provided immediate relief to the anxious public by confirming that there was no active tsunami threat following the seismic event.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency stated that no immediate casualties or structural damages were reported across the affected Japanese regions. However, the East Japan Railway Company announced that operations of the Shinkansen bullet trains in the northeastern sectors were temporarily halted to conduct mandatory safety inspections. The sudden tremors also caused brief power supply disruptions along sections of the Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen railway lines.
