Srinagar: India’s ambitious Zojila Tunnel project reached a crucial stage on Tuesday, with the final breakthrough scheduled for the 13.15 kilometre long tunnel that is expected to transform road connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh.

The final breakthrough ceremony is set to be attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and several senior officials.

The Zojila Tunnel is being built at an altitude of around 11,578 feet in the difficult Himalayan terrain. Once completed, it will connect Baltal near Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir with Minamarg in the Drass Kargil region of Ladakh.

The project is being described as the world’s longest single tube, high altitude, two way road tunnel. Its biggest importance lies in the all weather connectivity it will provide between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, a region that often remains cut off from the rest of the country during harsh winter months.

At present, the Srinagar Ladakh National Highway remains closed for nearly six months every year because of heavy snowfall, avalanches and extreme weather conditions at the Zojila Pass. This not only affects civilian movement, trade and tourism, but also creates serious logistical challenges for the armed forces.

The tunnel is expected to give a major boost to India’s strategic mobility in a sensitive border region. Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh share proximity with areas close to the Pakistan and China borders. Faster movement of troops, supplies and equipment to forward locations is expected to strengthen preparedness in the region.

The project is being executed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited. Along with the main tunnel, the Nilgrar tunnel system is also part of the corridor. It includes twin tube tunnels that will improve connectivity between Sonamarg and Baltal and provide smoother access to the main Zojila Tunnel.

Officials have also incorporated modern avalanche protection measures in the project, including cut and cover structures and strong safety walls designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions of the western Himalayas.

Beyond its strategic significance, the Zojila Tunnel is expected to bring major benefits for local people. Better connectivity can improve access to emergency services, strengthen tourism, reduce travel disruptions and support regional economic growth.

For Ladakh, this project is more than an infrastructure milestone. It is a long awaited lifeline that could change how the region remains connected with the rest of India through the year.
