Kolkata: Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee is currently recovering under medical supervision at home after sustaining injuries during the recent attack on him in Sonarpur, according to party leaders and reports emerging from Kolkata. The incident has triggered widespread political reactions across West Bengal and intensified the ongoing confrontation between the TMC and the BJP.
Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked on Saturday while visiting families reportedly affected by post poll violence in South 24 Parganas district. According to the TMC leader, a group of protesters threw eggs, stones and other objects at him. Banerjee claimed that a brick struck near his eye during the confrontation and described the incident as an attempt to physically harm him.
Following the attack, Banerjee was taken to a private hospital in Kolkata for medical examination and treatment. Visuals from the hospital showed him arriving in a wheelchair, while senior Trinamool leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, rushed to the medical facility to check on his condition. Reports indicated that doctors conducted detailed examinations after he complained of injuries sustained during the incident.
According to reports, doctors later advised that his treatment could continue from home under observation. Sources said Banerjee’s condition is stable and there is no immediate cause for major concern, though he remains under medical monitoring following the injuries. TV9 Bangla reported that consultations were held with multiple doctors before the decision was taken to continue treatment at home.
The attack has led to a strong political response from the Trinamool Congress. Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident and alleged that adequate security was not provided despite potential threats. She also expressed concern over Banerjee’s safety and questioned the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
Meanwhile, Banerjee has asserted that video footage of the incident exists and has announced plans to pursue legal action. He has maintained that the attack was politically motivated and said he would continue his political activities despite the incident.
The BJP has denied allegations of orchestrating the attack and claimed that the protests reflected public anger rather than any organised political action. The party has accused the TMC of politicising the incident.
The episode has once again brought attention to the issue of political violence in West Bengal, with both major parties exchanging allegations over security, public unrest and post election tensions. As Banerjee continues to recover, the political fallout from the Sonarpur incident is expected to remain a major issue in the state’s political discourse.
