New Delhi: An FIR has been lodged against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over allegations of hurting religious sentiments through her remarks on Sanatana Dharma, adding another legal and political controversy around the Trinamool Congress leader after the party’s recent electoral setback.

According to the ABP Live report, the FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by advocate Rinki Chatterjee Singh at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station. Police officials said the complaint was linked to alleged remarks made by Banerjee during a public address, where she was accused of making objectionable comments about Hindu religion and Sanatana Dharma.

The complainant alleged that Banerjee had used the phrase “ganda dharma” while speaking at an Eid prayer event held at Red Road in Kolkata in 2025. She also claimed that the former chief minister followed Muslim customs at the public event and made comments that hurt Hindu religious sentiments. The allegations remain subject to investigation and legal scrutiny.

Rinki Chatterjee Singh also accused some Trinamool Congress leaders of making objectionable statements against Hindu religion and deities. She claimed that whenever she tried to get FIRs registered in such matters earlier, her complaints were not accepted and she was allegedly insulted.

The report comes at a politically sensitive time for the TMC. After the party’s defeat in West Bengal, internal unease and organisational pressure have reportedly increased. ABP Live also referred to claims that more than 100 TMC councillors had resigned, adding to the political churn within the party.

The case is likely to deepen the political confrontation between the TMC and its rivals, especially because religious comments by senior political leaders often trigger sharp public and legal reactions. However, at this stage, the matter is based on the complainant’s allegations, and any conclusion will depend on the police investigation and the legal process.

For Mamata Banerjee, the FIR adds to a series of political challenges at a time when her party is trying to deal with post election pressure and questions over its organisational strength. The next development will depend on how the police proceed with the complaint and whether the matter reaches the court.
