Kolkata: A fresh controversy has erupted in West Bengal politics after a Kolkata Municipal Corporation list reportedly showed the name Sayani Ghosh as a joint owner of a property linked to Trinamool Congress national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. The development has triggered political debate, with TMC MP Saayoni Ghosh strongly denying any connection to the property.
According to the report, KMC has issued notices in connection with 17 properties allegedly linked to Abhishek Banerjee. The civic body had earlier sent notices regarding two buildings, including one on Kalighat Road and another known as Shantiniketan Building. The latest discussion began after a list sourced to KMC records showed a flat at 19D Seven Tanks Road in Kolkata as jointly owned by Abhishek Banerjee and a person named Sayani Ghosh.
The mention of the name immediately led to speculation over whether the person was TMC MP Saayoni Ghosh. She later issued a clarification on social media, calling the claim completely false. Ghosh said she had seen forwarded messages claiming that she and Abhishek Banerjee jointly owned the property, but asserted that the Sayani Ghosh mentioned in the records was not her.
She further said that all properties owned by her had already been declared in her election affidavit and could be verified through official records. In an emotional response, Ghosh said she came from a humble family background and had not received any sudden political benefit or shortcut. She said her public journey had been shaped by people’s blessings.
The notices issued by KMC’s building department reportedly seek building plans and other property related documents. The notice was issued under Section 400(1) of the building department law. As per the notice, if any construction is found to be beyond the approved plan, the concerned portion must be removed within seven days. If there is no response, the municipal body may issue another notice and later take demolition action on its own.
The issue has also acquired a sharp political colour. TMC has rejected the allegations and claimed that the notice was unofficially leaked by the BJP. The party said attempts were being made to drag Abhishek Banerjee and other leaders into the matter through what it called false and baseless media coverage.
The controversy comes at a sensitive time in Bengal politics, where allegations and counter allegations between the ruling TMC and the BJP have intensified. While the civic notice has raised questions around property records and building approvals, the strong denial from Saayoni Ghosh has added another layer to the unfolding row.
For now, the matter rests on official verification of municipal records, property ownership details and the response to KMC’s notices. But politically, the issue has already become a fresh flashpoint in Bengal’s charged public space.
