New Delhi: The date for Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid, has been officially announced in India, bringing clarity for preparations across the country.
Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari announced that Bakrid will be celebrated in India on Thursday, May 28, 2026. The decision came after a meeting of the Markazi Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee at Jama Masjid on Sunday evening, where the moon for the Islamic month of Zil Hajj was not sighted.
In a video message issued after the meeting, Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari said the moon of Zil Hajj had not been seen. He stated that the committee had decided to complete 30 days, following which the first day of Zil Hajj would fall on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
As per Islamic tradition, Eid-ul-Adha is observed on the 10th day of Zil Hajj, the final month of the Islamic calendar. With the month beginning on May 19, the 10th day will fall on May 28.
“Eid-ul-Adha, Inshallah, will be on May 28, Thursday,” the Shahi Imam announced, clearing uncertainty over the festival date.
Bakrid is one of the most important festivals for Muslims and is marked by prayers, sacrifice, charity and gatherings with family and community members. With the formal announcement now made, preparations are expected to gather pace in markets, mosques and households across India.
