New Delhi: It was the kind of return that silences all doubters. Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill, back after missing the previous match against Rajasthan Royals due to a muscle strain, walked out at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday and produced exactly the innings his team — and his own form — desperately needed.

Gill struck a commanding 70 off 45 balls, with 4 fours and 5 sixes, reaching his half-century in just 33 deliveries. The knock carried immense personal significance as well. It was his first T20 fifty in 20 innings, ending a wait of over a year. His previous half-century had come in IPL 2025, also against Delhi Capitals at the same Arun Jaitley Stadium, where he scored an unbeaten 93.

Gill showed signs of struggle in GT’s opening match of IPL 2026, scoring just 39 off 27 balls against Punjab. But this rapid half-century signaled that his trademark aggressive instincts are fully back.

The innings also carry larger implications. Gill has not been part of the Indian T20 setup for some time, making this IPL season particularly crucial for his international ambitions. A consistent run of form could well reignite his national team case.

Backed by Jos Buttler’s explosive 52 off 27 balls and Washington Sundar’s fluent 55 off 32 balls, Gujarat posted a formidable 210 for 4 in 20 overs — a total that eventually proved just enough to win the match by 1 run in a breathtaking finish.

For Gill, though, the personal milestone will linger longest. This was a captain’s innings in every sense — composed, aggressive, and perfectly timed.
