New Delhi: Tired of chemical-laden pest sprays filling your home with harsh fumes? Many Indian households are turning to a simple kitchen duo, onion and baking soda, as a natural, low-cost alternative to tackle pests like cockroaches, ants, and flies.

The idea may sound unconventional but rests on basic science and insect behaviour. When an onion is chopped, its sulphur compounds release a strong, pungent odour that spreads quickly through the air. Insects rely heavily on their sense of smell to locate food, especially decaying organic matter. This sharp scent often mimics a meal to pests such as cockroaches, ants, and fruit flies, drawing them in.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) plays the lethal role. It does not attract pests on its own but when mixed with onion, insects consume the bait. Inside their bodies, the alkaline baking soda reacts with stomach acids, producing carbon dioxide gas. This buildup disrupts digestion, causes internal pressure, and can eventually kill the pest. Some experts note the effect varies across species, and solid large-scale scientific proof remains limited, though field observations and pest control references support its potential as bait.

Easy home method: Chop one small onion finely and place it in a shallow dish. Add one to two teaspoons of baking soda and optionally a pinch of sugar to enhance appeal. Position the dish near problem areas such as kitchen sinks, dustbins, or corners. Replace the mixture every one to two days as the onion’s aroma fades. Always keep it out of reach of children and pets.

While this remedy offers a non-toxic, eco-friendly option, results vary. It may reduce visible pests but might not eliminate entire colonies hidden in walls or drains. For severe infestations, professional help is advisable.

This age-old kitchen hack reminds us that effective solutions sometimes hide right in our pantries, blending chemistry with clever observation of nature.
