Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a blistering attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) during a massive rally at Kolkata’s historic Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday, declaring that the “countdown” for the Mamata Banerjee-led government has begun amid growing public anger over corruption, violence, and misgovernance.
Addressing a huge crowd despite alleged attempts to disrupt attendance, PM Modi accused the TMC of panicking over impending loss of power. “The TMC government is scared of losing power, so they tried to prevent people from attending by blocking bridges, stopping road traffic, and tearing down posters.” But still, people came in large numbers,” he said.
He alleged that TMC workers called rally attendees “thieves”, adding, “The real thieves are known to the people.” The Prime Minister described the event as the start of a “new Bengal revolution”, vowing an end to the “ruthless government” and “maha jungle raj”. He invoked blessings of Mahishasuramardini (Goddess Durga) on the BJP and NDA, promising to rebuild Bengal in the vision of icons like Swami Vivekananda, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and Rabindranath Tagore.
PM Modi slammed the TMC for blocking central schemes unless “cut money” is paid, stifling development and forcing youth migration for jobs. “Change is unstoppable now,” he asserted.
Earlier in Silchar, Assam, the Prime Minister performed the bhoomi pujan for development projects worth over ₹23,550 crore, including the ₹22,860-crore Shillong-Silchar Corridor — a first-of-its-kind high-speed four-lane motorway in the Northeast to boost connectivity.
Mocking the Congress, he said, “Give Congress leaders paper and pen to write 24,000 crore — they won’t know how many zeros there are.” He accused the party of nearing a “century of defeats” and turning against national progress out of frustration.
The rallies signal intensified campaigning ahead of assembly polls in West Bengal and Assam.
