Guwahati: In a tense development that has gripped the nation’s defence circles, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet mysteriously vanished from radar screens shortly after takeoff, sparking an immediate and extensive search operation.

The advanced twin-engine aircraft, known for its agility and combat prowess, departed from Jorhat airbase in Assam on Thursday evening, only to lose contact moments later, leaving authorities scrambling for answers.

Defence officials confirmed that the jet, a cornerstone of India’s aerial defence strategy, was on a routine mission when it suddenly dropped off the radar. “Upon receiving information about the incident, IAF teams were immediately dispatched to the site for investigation and to locate the aircraft,” stated the Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) in Guwahati, adding that the reasons behind the radar blackout are being thoroughly examined.

Search teams, equipped with helicopters and ground units, have fanned out across the rugged terrains near Guwahati, coordinating efforts to trace the aircraft’s last known position. While no distress signals were reported, the IAF is leaving nothing unturned, with experts analysing flight data and weather conditions that might have played a role. The incident has raised concerns about potential technical glitches or environmental factors in the region, known for its challenging flying conditions, which could have contributed to the aircraft’s disappearance and the difficulties faced by search teams.

As the operation continues into its second day, defence sources assure us that more details will emerge soon, emphasising the priority of safety and recovery. This event underscores the high-risk nature of military aviation, even as the IAF maintains one of the world’s most robust fleets.
