Mumbai: In a poignant address during the Maharashtra assembly’s budget session, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed a startling personal connection to the plane crash that claimed the life of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

“The accident involving Ajit Dada happened in that plane, and I too have flown in it 4-5 times,” Fadnavis disclosed, underscoring the gravity of the incident that has left the state in mourning.

The session, which kicked off amid heightened emotions, saw Fadnavis emphasising the need for clarity amid swirling suspicions. “I am not saying that there should be no suspicion, but suspicion should be expressed in front of the right authority,” he urged, adding that any doubts should be directed to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) or the government for prompt action.

Investigations are underway by the DGCA and Crime Investigation Department (CID), with a plea for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe already forwarded to the Centre. Fadnavis noted that foreign expertise is being sought, and an audit of VSR Ventures’ operations — the company linked to the aircraft — is in progress. “One should wait for this investigation report,” he advised.

Paying tribute to Pawar, whom he affectionately called ‘Ajit Dada’, Fadnavis highlighted his predecessor’s unwavering discipline: “Ajit Pawar never tolerated undisciplined administration; we will fully follow his directions.” Despite the loss, the budget session presses on, with 15 bills slated for discussion and the state budget presentation on March 6. Fadnavis credited Pawar’s efforts in key initiatives, including a Rs 500 crore AI project for agriculture via the ‘Maha Vistar’ app, benefiting 30 lakh farmers by slashing production costs by 25-40 per cent.

The CM also touted financial gains, with Maharashtra receiving Rs 98,306 crore from the Centre — a Rs 20,000 crore jump — plus Rs 23,000 crore for railways this year alone. Yet, he lambasted the Opposition for “insulting the public’s mandate” through a critical letter, pointing out the absence of Sharad Pawar faction leaders from a key meeting.

As probes deepen, Fadnavis called for patience, balancing grief with governance in a session shadowed by tragedy.
