New Delhi: Former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi on Monday issued a public apology over a viral video in which he appeared to refer to himself and fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya as “the two biggest fugitives of India”, drawing widespread criticism online and from political quarters.

The footage, shared from a birthday celebration in London for Mallya — who is facing extradition proceedings in the United Kingdom — sparked outrage across social media platforms.

In the clip, Modi was heard joking about their status as wanted men in India, a remark that many saw as insensitive and disrespectful to law enforcement and governance.

Responding to the backlash, Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that his comment was “misconstrued” and not intended to offend anyone. He wrote, “I apologise if I have hurt anyone’s feelings, especially the Indian Government, whom I have the highest respect and regard for.” He reiterated that his words were “never intended to be as played out” in the viral clip.

A statement by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reaffirming its commitment to bringing back economic fugitives who are wanted in India to face legal proceedings had preceded the social media storm. The ministry emphasised its ongoing diplomatic and legal efforts with foreign counterparts to guarantee the return of these individuals to India.

Legal controversies in India have engulfed both Modi and Mallya due to alleged financial irregularities. While Mallya’s extradition battle continues in British courts, Modi has been living abroad since he left India amid probes into financial misconduct linked to his cricket administration tenure.

The episode underscores the sensitivity around remarks involving fugitives and the impact of social media on public discourse, prompting quick clarification and damage control from the former cricket official.
