New Delhi: The protracted matrimonial battle between Indian cricket star Mohammed Shami and his estranged wife Hasin Jahan has taken a fresh turn. The Supreme Court questioning the adequacy of her current maintenance while issuing notices to the pacer and the West Bengal government.
Separated since 2018, when Jahan lodged an FIR accusing Shami and his family of domestic violence and harassment, the couple’s legal saga spanned years. A trial court initially mandated Shami to provide ₹1.3 lakh monthly as interim maintenance. This was hiked to ₹4 lakh per month by the Calcutta High Court in July 2025 —₹1.5 lakh for Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh for their daughter — yet she remains dissatisfied.
In her latest appeal, Jahan seeks a steep escalation to ₹10 lakh monthly, allocating ₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for the child. Arguing before the apex court, she highlighted Shami’s status as an A-list national cricketer with an estimated net worth of ₹500 crore, contending that the current amount fails to sustain the lifestyle befitting elite sports families. “The disparity between the cricketer’s earnings and the victim’s upkeep is stark,” her plea stated, referencing support extended to other players’ kin.
The bench of Justices Manoj Misra and Ujjwal Bhuyan refrained from passing orders but posed a pointed query to Jahan’s counsel: “Is ₹4 lakh per month not sufficient for the aggrieved party?” The court has summoned responses from Shami and the state authorities ahead of the next hearing, underscoring the delicate balance between financial equity and marital discord in high-profile cases.
As Shami eyes a national team comeback post-injury, this off-field storm threatens to overshadow his on-pitch resurgence, reminding fans that personal battles can cast long shadows over sporting glory.
