Moscow: In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia has successfully tested its advanced nuclear-capable cruise missile, Burevestnik, which boasts an unlimited range and stealth capabilities capable of evading even the most sophisticated defence systems.

During a visit to the Ukraine frontline on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed details of the test conducted on October 21 while addressing troops.

According to Chief of General Staff General Valery Gerasimov, the missile flew for 15 hours, covering 14,000 kilometres (8,700 miles), remaining undetectable throughout.

Putin hailed it as an “invincible” weapon powered by a nuclear engine, capable of striking any corner of the world with a nuclear warhead.

Dubbed SSC-X-9 Skyfall by NATO, the 9M730 Burevestnik is a ground-launched, low-flying cruise missile that operates without conventional fuel, allowing it to stay airborne for days or even months.

Experts from the International Institute for Strategic Studies note its potential to reach 20,000 kilometres, putting major US cities like Washington, New York, and California within its grasp.

While Russia claims no equivalent exists elsewhere, Western analysts express concerns over radiation risks and past test failures, including a 2019 White Sea explosion that killed five scientists.

Putin, honouring their widows, emphasised the missile’s role in bolstering Russia’s security, and deployment preparations are underway.

This development has heightened tensions, especially as the Ukraine war enters its 32nd month, with Russian forces advancing in regions like Donbas, Sumy, and Kharkiv. The US and its allies are on high alert, viewing it as a direct challenge to global missile defence strategies.
