Lucknow: Hardoi Police has exposed a gang of marriage robbers, who were doing this work meticulously in Uttar Pradesh. The gang — consisting of men and women — had arranged marriages to lure victims before robbing them of their possessions after the ceremonies. Two women, including a bride who duped rich men out of money in a fake wedding scheme, are now in custody as authorities even recovered cash and jewels from them. However, one of the gang members is still free.
The Scam’s Shocking Tactics
The strategies employed by the gang were extremely fraudulent. Their targets included elderly and single men, whom they befriended under the pretence of seeking a marriage arrangement. The gang members, who had donned the roles of the mother and aunt of a young bride, bagged the proposals. After a match was found, the “wedding” would be held in a temple or registrar’s office. Following the wedding, the bride would make them sip tea mixed with a tranquilliser, and the family would quickly fall asleep. The gang then robbed them of money and jewellery before fleeing the scene.
Police claim the gang had executed over 13 other such robberies in Hardoi and a few other districts.
The Case Behind the Arrests
The matter came to the fore when Neeraj Gupta of Nawabganj in the Sandila area lodged an FIR. Pramod, who lives in Chiragpur Behti, got the marriage of his granddaughter done with Neeraj, said Neeraj. The bride filled out the paperwork at the registrar’s office, then donned the jewellery and fled with the valuables when she was able to make her escape.
After the complaint, police nabbed three women from the Loonar area — Poornima (also Sonam), Asha (also Guddi) and Sunita — who were allegedly part of the gang. Pramod, the key accused, is absconding, and police teams are on his trail.
