Illegal Spas And OYO Hotels Under Scanner As MCD Cracks Down On Rules

New Delhi: In a bid to reclaim the illegal commercial complexes in the capital, Delhi Mayor Mahesh Kumar has ordered the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Public Health Department to act tough against illegal spa centres, non-licensed eateries, and illegal OYO hotels in the city.

MCD’s Post-Election Actions

The move follows the recent Delhi Assembly polls, when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lost, clearing the way for a BJP government in the state, although the AAP still controls the MCD. Following the election outcome, the MCD has intensified its enforcement activities, now targeting illicit trade within its area of operation.

High-level meetings and strategic directives

Mayor Mahesh Kumar chaired a top-level meeting that resulted in the decision to take action against such illegal shops. Deputy Mayor Ravindra Bhardwaj, Municipal Health Officer Lallan Ram Verma, House Leader Mukesh Goyal, and Deputy Health Officers (DHOs) from all 12 zones of the MCD were present at the meeting.

Emphasising the need to curb illegal trade, Mayor Kumar emphasised the twofold threat of loss to the business firm and risk to public health and safety as a result of such illegal trade.

Enforcement and Revenue Protection

In his announcement, Mayor Kumar directed the Public Health Department to take strong measures to shut down illegally operated businesses and formulate a clear action plan. He stressed that these unregulated shops not only evade mandatory approvals and licensing requirements but also result in huge revenue loss to the MCD.

Mayor Kumar emphasised the importance of financial sustainability and reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing MCD’s revenue without compromising essential civic services due to financial constraints. MCD’s Commitment to Reforms

The AAP government has reasserted its commitment to making the municipal corporation financially self-sufficient by improving citizen services in the city. The mayor’s directive is a part of the overall push to take over the city’s commercial space and uphold governance standards.

The next few weeks will see increased action against illegal spas, unauthorised OYO hotels, and unlicensed restaurants as the MCD tries to establish a legally regulated business landscape in Delhi.
